FULL ITINERARY:

DAY 1: (B&B) Chioggia

Arrival in Chioggia and check-in at the hotel at around 6:00 PM, meeting with our local contact, who will hand over the bicycles and information about the chosen itinerary. (dinner on your own) and overnight stay at the hotel/B&B.

DAY 2: (H.B) Chioggia – Ca’ Tiepolo

Breakfast at the accommodation, then departure. The start of the route through the Po Delta couldn’t be better. The history of the Delta is deeply tied to Venice, which shaped its contours through a huge feat of hydraulic engineering: the Taglio di Porto Viro. Chioggia, also known as Little Venice, has a wonderful cycle path running alongside the Lusenzo lagoon, which forms the first stretch of our itinerary and will lead you first to Sottomarina and then to Brondolo. The crossing of the Brenta river deserves special mention, made via the bridge on the SS Romea state road; right after this you turn right and follow the Po Brondolo valley canal until you reach the Adige river. Here too you cross the river on the SS Romea, and once across you take the Destra Adige path toward the river mouth, a cycle path you’ll follow until you meet the Via delle Valli. Here begin twelve kilometres of extraordinary beauty, with the route running between lagoons and fish farms that will bring you to the Po di Levante, at the mouth of which lies the ferry crossing to Porto Levante. You continue cycling along the Via delle Valli, which mirrors the landscape of the first stretch, until reaching Scanarello, a handful of houses set against the Po di Maistra. From here you can take the road leading to Boccasette or the one leading to Ca’ Venier — either way, you’ll arrive at the bridge crossing the Po di Venezia and leading to Ca’ Tiepolo. Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 3: (H.B) Ca’ Tiepolo – Pomposa/Volano

After breakfast, you set off again by bike and take the cycle path that first leads to Ca’ Mello, a small hamlet of Porto Tolle, and then to the Sacca degli Scardovari, with its splendid scenic road running alongside it, bordered on one side by the largest lagoon in the Delta, home to mussel, clam and oyster farms, and on the other by countryside skilfully cultivated with wheat, barley and rice. Continuing south, you’ll pass in quick succession through Santa Giulia, then, after the first pontoon bridge, Gorino Sullam, and before the next pontoon bridge, Gorino Veneto. Once in Emilia-Romagna, you continue along the bank of the Po di Goro as far as the town of the same name, cycling around its distinctive harbour and, taking the road that skirts the Sacca di Goro, crossing the Gran Bosco della Mesola, before arriving in Volano/Pomposa. Check-in at the hotel/agriturismo, dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 4: (H.B) Pomposa/Volano – Comacchio

Breakfast and departure. From the Abbey of Pomposa, you continue toward Volano, following low-traffic roads through the reclaimed lands of the Valle Giralda; along the way you can admire the Canneviè Oasis and the Torre della Finanza on the bank of the Po di Volano, before finally reaching Lido di Volano, the northernmost of the Comacchio Lidos, surrounded by the mouth of the Po di Volano, the Sacca di Goro, and a charming pine forest. You then take the cycle path through the Volano Pine Forest Nature Reserve, leading to Lido delle Nazioni. From here you continue toward the Pomposa and Scacchi lidos until reaching Porto Garibaldi, one of the most important ports on the northern Adriatic, home to a fleet of fishing boats specialising in blue fish, where you can taste or buy excellent fresh fish. Thanks to the bike-and-pedestrian ferry across the port canal, you reach Lido degli Estensi and head toward the Comacchio Valleys, following a stretch of road and then a cycle path. Be sure to stop for a panoramic view from the lookout tower over the Logonovo canal and, along the way, surrounded by the waters of Valle Fattibello and the Saline, enjoy the spectacular sight of countless flamingos and other birds in flight before arriving in Comacchio. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel/agriturismo.

DAY 5: (B&B) Comacchio – Marina Romea/Marina di Ravenna

After breakfast, you head toward Ravenna, leaving the historic centre of the lagoon town behind as you skirt Valle Fattibello, until you reach Stazione Foce, the nerve centre of the entire valley ecosystem, which you can observe from above by climbing the lookout tower. From here, cycling along the valley embankment, you first reach Casone Donnabona and then the Argine Agosta, along which you continue as far as Sant’Alberto. Here there are two options for reaching Marina Romea:

1) continue along the embankment without taking the ferry, keeping the valley on your left, until you reach the Romea state road; after crossing it, continue to Casal Borsetti, from where you reach Marina Romea. Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

2) take the ferry, and after crossing at Sant’Alberto, take the cycle path running alongside the Destra Reno canal until reaching the Romea state road; after crossing it, continue to Casal Borsetti, from where you reach Marina Romea. Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

PURCHASABLE EXPERIENCE

Small-boat excursion to the Pialassa Baiona

The small-boat excursion to the Pialassa Baiona is a truly evocative experience — a small oasis where you can admire flamingos, traditional valley fishing huts, and the beautiful swan sanctuary along with various other bird species, plus a glimpse of the heron colony. On the way back, you’ll have the pleasure of watching the sunset over the valley — an unforgettable moment for taking beautiful photos, whether you’re a photography enthusiast or not. Duration approximately 2.5 hours.

DAY 6: (B&B) Ravenna

After breakfast, you head toward Ravenna. From Marina Romea, you continue to Porto Corsini, where you take a small ferry (paid) to reach Marina di Ravenna. You cycle on to the Ortazzo oasis and the Classe pine forest, then reach Sant’Apollinare in Classe, the Classis Museum and the ancient port of Classe, before finally arriving in the city centre, where you’ll check in to your reserved rooms (dinner on your own) and stay overnight at the hotel.

Guided visits to the archaeological sites can be arranged, upon request.
